The Catharsis Trunk is an organizing body which act as stewards for the Catharsis Tree, ensuring continued and sustained alignment of the organization with our mission and growth. The work of the Trunk is mostly distributed amongst various Catharsis Branches, committees made up of leads, Trunk members, and additional volunteers as needed.
The Catharsis on the Mall Trunk comprises leaders from the District’s creative and activist communities who are dedicated to the organization’s mission. Serving on the Catharsis on the Mall Trunk is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about the mission, strengthening leadership, connecting different parts of our Washington DC community, and governance in our community.
Trunk members are expected to attend trunk meetings regularly throughout the year. They are expected to come prepared to all meetings by reading all materials such as emails or documents in the Shared Folder. The expectation is to have engaged members that have questions and participate in discussions. Additionally, Trunk members will have a designated buddy to help them along the way.
Trunk members are expected to serve on one or more committees aka Branches of the trunk and to actively participate in Branch work.
Trunk members are expected to play an active role in securing the financial resources necessary for Catharsis on the Mall to achieve its mission. Trunk members are expected to leverage personal relationships and connections to help the development Branch identify and solicit potential funders, as well as directly invest in Catharsis on the Mall’s work through their contribution of time, energy, and resources each year.
Trunk members are expected to responsibly represent Catharsis on the Mall to their respective communities and to advocate for Catharsis on the Mall’s mission and programs.
Trunk terms last for one year and Trunk members can serve for up to two consecutive terms.
Full Trunk meetings have been scheduled as frequently as every other week, in the months immediately before the event. Branch meetings generally occur at least once a month, with some Branches meeting more than others. So Trunk members should be prepared to commit to 6 hours of meetings a month at times, with at least as much work outside of meetings.
Roots will consist of the current (2017) board members and over time the Roots membership and role may grow or shrink at the determination of current Roots members. Roots are intended as an experimental (and, potentially, transitional) structure, in ongoing conversation with the Trunk and community. The Roots’ intended role is to defend the core values of Catharsis, cultivate and encourage new Trunk members, and ensure continuity and accountability around Trunk elections.
Informally, the Roots are an advisory group that are available as desired by Trunk and may attend any Trunk meetings (no vote, expected to take a backseat in conversation as “ex-officio” members). Formally, the Roots may veto changes to bylaws or other core decisions by the Trunk (e.g. budget, theme) with a full 3/4 majority of Roots members. There can be no unilateral change to The Root’s veto check organizational role by the Trunk.
